So, you’re wondering how to change your life. Majority of people will ask themselves this question at-least once in their lifetime. I know I have a few times.
How to change your life is a question you ask yourself when you feel defeated. You’re tired of the way your life is.
Maybe you have big dreams but you feel like you’re slowly moving away from them. On the other hand, maybe you don’t have any dreams or goals at all.
Whatever the case may be you need everything to change. The fact that you’re trying to figure out how to change your life proves that you have a desire for something new.
The good news is, you have the power to change your whole life at any moment. Similarly, your desire for change will be your fuel to take the right steps.
If you’re really curious on how to change your life, here are 10 things you can do right now to get started.
1. Create The Future You
Take some time to really think about what you want in life. What do you want to accomplish in life? What makes you feel happy?
The truth is, your life is the way it is right now because of the choices you’ve made up until this point in time. So, in order to change your life you need to make new choices.
If you don’t have a vision for your new life you will most likely continue making the same choices that got you to this point.
Think about what an average day of your new life will look like. What does the future you look like? Write down all the details that come to mind.
2. Define What You Don’t Like
Alternatively to creating the future you, take some time to define what you currently don’t like about your life.
Being aware of what you don’t like about your current life will help you create a stronger vision for the future. Write down the things you want to change.
3. Set Goals
Once you have a vision of your new life and define what you don’t like the next step is to take action. Setting goals will help you stay on track and give you a clear path to changing your life.
Start by setting small daily goals. Next, set monthly goals, yearly goals, and life goals. These goals will act as your compass towards your new life.
4. Shift Your Focus
If you’re not happy with your current life thinking about it constantly will only make it worse.
Instead, shift your focus to the future. Become aware of your thoughts. Whenever you begin to dwell on your current situation shift your focus towards the future. Visualize the new life you will live.
5. Get Uncomfortable
Change happens outside of the comfort zone. If you’re serious about learning how to change your life you will feel uncomfortable once you take action. Doing anything new feels unfamiliar to us.
Similarly, start stepping out of your comfort zone. Do something new everyday. If you drive the same route to work every morning start taking a different route. Get used to feeling uncomfortable.
On my journey to changing my life one thing I always wanted to do was move away from my home state. I didn’t like anything about it. To me it was boring, gloomy and dull. I had a desire to experience a new place full of new adventures.
However, for a long time I was scared to do it. The unknown was so exciting but scary at the same time. Eventually after many years I did it. As a result, to this day it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. A lot of positive outcomes came from it.
Write down a list of things that scare you that you want to do. Then go do them.
6. Make New Friends
The old saying goes, you are who you hang out with. Similarly, you are the average of your 5 closest friends.
Try to look for new friends who are already living the life you want to live. Or friends that are also striving to change their lives. These friends will help make change easier. They may also inspire and motivate you when you lack motivation.
7. Avoid Making Excuses
Change can be hard. The hardest part tends to be the limiting beliefs and stories we tell ourselves.
There was a point in my life where I didn’t exercise at all. I’d spend all of my days either working or relaxing. I knew I needed to change but getting the ball rolling was the hardest part.
I would constantly tell myself things like:
“I’ll go to them gym tomorrow”
“I need to get gym clothes before I start working out”
“It’s genetic that I’m like this”
“I don’t have time to go to the gym”
“I’m young, I don’t need to worry about health”
“I will have plenty of time to worry about my health in the future”
These were all limiting beliefs and excuses. They simply were not true. I was just telling myself these things so I could feel comfortable about not changing.
Do you tell yourself excuses or stories that are preventing you from changing your life?
Become aware of the things you tell yourself when change approaches. Then make an effort to start telling yourself the opposite.
8. Focus On You
In today’s world it’s so easy to compare our lives to others. We go on social media and see highlight reels of peoples lives. Usually they make their lives seem better then they really are.
That tends to trigger us to compare ourselves. We start to think negatively about our lives.
The only person you should compare yourself to is the person you were yesterday.
Take a day to disconnect from social media. Spend the day with yourself and remind yourself of all the things you’ve accomplished so far.
9. Plan Your Days
It’s easy to get distracted throughout the day. Especially when you have no plan in place.
Making a list of things to do throughout your day can help you stay on track. It also gives you a self esteem booster when you check something off your list. This can be a good way to build momentum to keep moving forward towards your changed life.
10. Read & Study More
There is one major benefit to the 21st century. That is the fact that we have access to unlimited information at our finger tips.
Majority of success people make it a priority to read everyday. The biggest benefit of reading and studying others is the fact that you can learn someones biggest mistakes / life lessons by simply reading about them.
Start studying people who changed their lives. There are plenty of people out there that went from the worst circumstances to living the completely opposite lifestyle.
You might come across someone who was once in your exact position. Take time to study and learn how they changed their lives.
Conclusion
Changing your life may seem overwhelming at first. However, you have already taken the first step. Learning how to change your life shows that you have a level of desire for a new life.
